Youth Cafe at Tiree High School

Between late 2014 and early 2015, Our Island Home visited Tobermory High School, Tiree High School and Glencruitten School Hostel in Oban which provides board for secondary pupils from the Ross of Mull, Iona, Coll, Colonsay and Lismore. We spoke to senior pupils about housing options and homelessness. While we wouldn’t wish to prevent young people from leaving the islands to pursue their dreams for education and adventure, we want to  help young people realise that there are housing options available to them, and if there are not, we will find a way to create them. Amongst other factors, the lack of affordable housing and land to build it on, is a massive challenge for remote rural Scotland. Transportation costs and lack of labour affects new builds on many Hebridean islands. it is fundamental that the next generation are involved in shaping the future of their communities.

Warms thanks goes to Argyll and Bute Council and Homeless Action Scotland for providing support in delivering these sessions.

It is our intention to deliver housing education sessions to secondary school pupils in schools outwit Argyll in the near future.
