Doing it yourself

Some communities seek to build or renovate affordable housing to tackle local needs themselves – developing a community asset which they can manage for the benefit of local people.  This can be more complex than working with housing associations and is likely to require a large investment of volunteer time. However, it can allow a more tailored and flexible approach to the needs of local people and, in some cases, help develop a long term income stream for the community.

Whichever route you choose you will need to consider the housing need in your area and how you will engage with the community.

If you are intending to pursue the project yourself, you will also need to consider housing options, finding finance, and managing the sale or rental of the homes you build.
