Communities Housing Trust is the leading organisation for facilitating community-led housing in Scotland. We work closely with communities across rural, remote and island areas to actively tackle repopulation and long-term sustainability.
We take a holistic view and creative approach that looks beyond just housing, and have worked with more than 120 communities across central and northern Scotland to facilitate well over 1,000 genuinely affordable homes and other much-needed facilities such as a primary school, NHS health centre, commercial and workshop space, education and training facilities, shinty pitch and social spaces.
Together with communities, we develop viable solutions to the evolving challenges of community development in less well-served places. This includespioneering a range of housing tenures, and financial and technical solutions (such as the Rural Housing Burden) that provide much-needed flexibility and support, and are used Scotland-wide.
Developments such as in Gairloch, Staffin and Strontian have been recognised across the UK, Europe and internationally for providing practical and holistic models for regeneration, raising confidence amongst communities in Scotland for what’s possible.
We are a member of the Woodland Crofts Partnership alongside the Woodland Trust, Scottish Crofting Federation and the Community Woodlands Association to establish new woodland crofts, including a pioneering project in Glengarry to help repopulate the glen.
